Photo Studio Rent in Chennai: What You Pay Per Hour and What’s Included

Photo Studio in Virugambakkam, Chennai with props

Table of Contents

Photo studio rent per hour in Chennai can look similar from one listing to the next, but the final bill often isn’t. One studio quotes Rs. 1,200 an hour and adds electricity by the unit. Another quotes Rs. 2,500 and includes the full lighting kit, the props and the power. A third looks cheap until you see the four-hour minimum and the maintenance charge.

This guide compares the starting rates on six Chennai photo studios listed on Spottle, from Purusaiwakkam and Kodambakkam to T.Nagar, Kolathur, Virugambakkam and R.A. Puram. More usefully, it explains what’s behind the number: minimum hours, EB charges, equipment, headcount, assistants and cancellation terms. All prices below are the “starts from” rates shown on each listing page as of October 2026, and hosts note that final pricing can vary with your requirements.

Read across the rows rather than down the price column. The Virugambakkam studio’s Rs. 2,000 covers the room only, while R.A. Puram’s Rs. 2,500 includes lights, power and props. For a shoot that needs lighting, the higher hourly rate can work out cheaper.

What Drives Photo Studio Rent per Hour in Chennai

Eight factors explain most of the difference between a quote and the final bill. Ask about each one before you book.

1. Minimum hours and fixed slots

Most studios have a minimum booking, usually two hours. Kolathur’s is four. T.Nagar works in fixed slots of 3, 4, 6, 9 and 12 hours with set time windows, so a two-hour shoot still books a three-hour slot. Kodambakkam offers 5, 9 and 12-hour packages, which suit full catalogue days. If your shoot is short, a studio with a two-hour minimum keeps the total down.

2. EB and power charges

Electricity is easy to miss in a quote. T.Nagar adds EB at Rs. 35 per unit on top of the hourly rate, and lists power backup charges separately. R.A. Puram includes EB in its rate. Video shoots that run several continuous lights for hours draw more power than a quick flash shoot, so the EB line grows with the length of the shoot. Ask whether EB is included and, if not, how it’s metered.

3. Equipment included or added on

This is the biggest variable. R.A. Puram includes a full Godox kit with flashes, LED lights, modifiers and triggers for Sony and Canon. Kolathur includes the lights, backdrops and props at the studio. Kodambakkam includes strobes, continuous lights and backdrops. Virugambakkam charges for all equipment separately, and Purusaiwakkam is set up for photographers who bring their own. If you’re bringing lights into a studio that has its own, check the policy: T.Nagar charges Rs. 650 per outside video light per day.

4. Headcount

Some studios price by the number of people on set. T.Nagar allows seven to eight people and charges Rs. 500 for each additional person. Count everyone: photographer, assistant, models, stylist, makeup artist and the client. A fashion shoot with a full team can cross the limit quickly.

5. Assistants and floor staff

A studio assistant to move lights and backdrops is usually an add-on. T.Nagar charges Rs. 1,000 an hour, Kodambakkam Rs. 1,500 per session, and Kolathur Rs. 1,500 for a 9 AM to 6 PM day, with one floor manager included. R.A. Puram and Virugambakkam offer production assistants on request at extra cost.

6. Backdrops, props and set work

Paper backdrops are consumables. Kodambakkam charges Rs. 350 per extra roll used. Painting a cyclorama or props almost always costs extra: Kolathur charges Rs. 4,000 to repaint the cyclorama, and T.Nagar, R.A. Puram and Virugambakkam charge for paint and labour on any modification. Kolathur also charges half-day rates for set building before or after your booking day.

7. Late hours, overtime and cancellation

Evening rates can be higher. Kolathur charges Rs. 2,000 an hour after 9 PM, and T.Nagar notes that hourly charges after 9 PM may vary. Overrunning your slot is usually billed as extra hours. Cancellation terms vary widely too: T.Nagar issues no refunds on cancellation but allows rescheduling within a week, so read the terms before paying an advance.

8. Makeup rooms, green rooms and break areas

Changing and makeup space is included at most studios, but not always without limits. Virugambakkam gives 20 minutes of complimentary green room access per booking, and extra time can be charged. Kodambakkam, T.Nagar and Kolathur have makeup rooms or suites. Eating is restricted at several studios: T.Nagar doesn’t allow lunch inside the studio but has a terrace for it, and Kolathur doesn’t allow dining in its lounge. If your team will be on set all day, ask where they can take a break.

How to Keep Your Studio Hire Cost Down in Chennai

Most of the savings come from planning the shoot before you arrive, not from finding the lowest hourly rate.

Book the right length. If a studio sells fixed slots or packages, match your shot list to the slot rather than paying for hours you won’t use. Kodambakkam’s 9 and 12-hour packages suit catalogue days, while a two-hour minimum suits a quick portrait session.

Use the kit that’s included. Bringing your own lights into a studio that already has them can cost you twice, and T.Nagar charges for outside lights by the light and the day. If you need a specific setup, choose a room-only studio like Virugambakkam or Purusaiwakkam instead.

Keep the team tight and finish on time. Extra people trigger headcount charges at T.Nagar, overruns are billed as extra hours, and evening hours cost more at Kolathur. Do styling and makeup prep before your slot begins where you can, and leave the set as you found it to avoid cleaning or repainting charges.

A Worked Example: Four Hours for a Product Shoot

Say you need four hours, studio lighting and a white background, with a team of four. At listed starting rates, here’s how three studios compare.

At T.Nagar, four hours at Rs. 1,200 is Rs. 4,800, with lights and a cyclorama included, plus EB at Rs. 35 per unit. At Virugambakkam, four hours at Rs. 2,000 is Rs. 8,000 before you add any lights. At R.A. Puram, four hours at Rs. 2,500 is Rs. 10,000, with lights, modifiers, props and EB all included. For a fast packshot day, T.Nagar comes out cheapest. If you need the extra lights, modifiers and set props, R.A. Puram’s all-in rate is easier to budget. These are starting rates, so confirm the final figure with the host.

Before You Book a Photo Studio in Chennai

Run through this checklist with the host. It takes five minutes and prevents most billing surprises.

  • Is the rate per hour, and what’s the minimum booking or fixed slot?
  • Is EB included, and is power backup charged separately?
  • Which lights, modifiers and backdrops are included, and which cost extra?
  • How many people are allowed before extra headcount charges apply?
  • Is air conditioning included in the shoot area?
  • Is setup and pack-down time inside your booked hours?
  • What happens if you cancel or need to reschedule?

The type of shoot matters as much as the price. For daylight portraits, our guide to natural light photo studios in Chennai covers studios with windows and skylights. For e-commerce work, see the product photography studios in Chennai guide, and for recipe videos and food styling, the kitchen studios for food photography.

Which Studio Fits Your Budget

If you have your own lights and need a clean white room for a few hours, Purusaiwakkam has the lowest starting rate here. For a lit studio at a low hourly rate, Kodambakkam and T.Nagar both include lights, with Kodambakkam’s packages suited to long catalogue days and T.Nagar’s cyclorama suited to e-commerce. Just budget for T.Nagar’s EB and headcount charges.

For larger productions that need an infinity cove, high ceilings and drive-in access, Kolathur’s four-hour minimum makes sense. If you’re bringing a specific lighting setup and want a controlled room, Virugambakkam works on a room-only basis. When you’d rather not think about add-ons at all, R.A. Puram’s rate includes the kit, the props and the power.
